Report: Indiana in "Extreme Drought"

By: Michael C. Fehn
Updated: June 21, 2012
A new report states that the southwestern corner of Indiana is in "extreme drought", and conditions continue to worsen.

According to the report, nearly 80 percent of the state is in at least a moderate drought.  The new US drought monitor map released today shows counties in the Evansville area with the driest conditions.

A wide area of the state from around Lafayette to north of Fort Wayne is also shown in severe drought.

More than 40 of Indiana's 92 counties have open burning bans, with local officials worried about fires spreading quickly from dry grass and vegetation.

Much of the state has gone weeks without significant rain.
