Indianas Attorney General Steve Carter says its a crime thats becoming more and more common.
Identity theft is costly to both companies and individuals.
So costly in fact, that Carter put together a new way to combat it.
Sunday, the Attorney General unveiled the new "Identity Theft Unit" in Evansville.
Its made up of two deputy attorney generals, investigators, and support staff.
They will work with Hoosiers like Michelle Sybesma.
A victim, whose information was stolen from a job application.
Sybesma says someone had created an entire identity in her name using core bits of information and previously established decent credit.
The Attorney General says the unit will work with individuals to restore credit, in some case helping to prosecute.
But says the idea is not to become a victim.
By not providing personal information unless necessary, not displaying credit cards, or receipts.
