Field Fire Breaks Out in Southern Illinois

By: Chris Veech
Updated: June 29, 2012
Several southern Illinois firemen were treated for heat exhaustion while fighting a large field fire this evening.

The fire was on Duncan Rd., five miles southwest of Carrier Mills in Saline County.Nearly 100 acres of field and brush were destroyed.

Crews say the uneven terrain and thick grass and brush caused the fire to burn quick and caused firefighters a few challenges.

Six fire crews responded to the scene.

It took them several hours to put out the blaze.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but authorities say a cigarette may be to blame.
