About 100 kids also filled Garvin Park today vying for the biggest catch. Its all a part of the annual Fishing Derby for Kids. The event is free and open to kids of all ages. Its an all volunteer event that started as a part of the Freedom Festival.

When the festival ended, organizers wanted to continue the event to give kids a chance to get involved in the sport of fishing.

"This is just something we wanted to do to bring kids to fishing," said organizer Steve Ford, "because if they're fishing, they're not going to be out getting into other trouble, and it gives them something they can fo their entire lives."

This is the 23rd year for the annual event. Even with the extreme heat, organizers say they are only down a few people from last year.
