News Release: From: Komen Greater Evansville Association Fourth Annual Crop for the Cure® to be held this weekend! EVANSVILLE, IN – The Greater Evansville Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure will benefit from the fourth annual Crop for the Cure® to be held Saturday, March 15 at the Vanderburgh County 4-H Center. Amanda Bulkley, creator of the local event, designed the first Crop in 2005 which drew 60 avid crafters. This years’ event actually consists of two sold-out dates for a total of 500 crafters! Mrs. Bulkley, the heart and soul of the event, describes the Crop as an event where scrap bookers and paper crafters come together to share their hobby. “Some people come for the social aspect”, explained Amanda, “while others come with a mission to get their photographs out of boxes and onto pages.” Monies raised from the event provide funding for local education, screening, treatment and support programs in addition to supporting Komen’s Award and Research Grant Program. Last years event raised an amazing $11,500 which was used to help fund programs in our 28-county service area within Indiana, Illinois & Kentucky. Susan G. Komen for the Cure began as a promise between Nancy Goodman Brinker and her sister Susan Goodman Komen, who died from breast cancer at age 36. Twenty-five years later, this promise has grown to engage more than 100,000 breast cancer survivors and activists around the world. By the end of 2007, Komen will have invested nearly $1 billion in breast cancer research and community outreach programs, becoming the world’s leading source of funds fighting breast cancer. An estimated 182,460 new cases of breast cancer are expected to occur among women in the United States this year. In addition, it is estimated that 1,990 men will be diagnosed. 40,480 women and 450 men will die from breast cancer. However, due to early detection and better treatment programs there are now more than 2.5 million breast cancer survivors living in the United States.
