FDA Issues Alert About Deaths From UCB Cough Medicine
(Washington, DC) -- Reports of life-threatening side effects and patient deaths have prompted the FDA to issue an alert about the prescription cough medicine Tussionex.
According to the reports, doctors are sometimes prescribing and patients sometimes taking more than the recommended dose of the cough suppressant.
Tussionex should not be taken more often than every 12 hours or given to children under the age of six.
The long-acting cough product contains a narcotic that can cause life-threatening breathing problems if too much of the medication is taken or if it is taken too often.
