IDEM Hosts Public Hearing For Proposed Rockport Plant Permit

The proposed permit discusses the pumping of wastewater and storm water run-off into the Ohio River. IDEM says the permit is tailored to protect fish, public health, and the environment. But some residents living in Rockport and surrounding areas say they don't trust the agency for protection from harmful pollutants. One group rallying against the gasification plant is Sierra Club.
"We think it's wrong. We think Rockport, Indiana is one of the most polluted places on earth and adding this plant to the mix adds insult to injury," says Sierra Club regional coordinator Thomas Pearce. "We shouldn't have to pay for our own poisoning."
Residents can still have a voice regarding the environmental permit. IDEM is accepting written comments through July 16. Those comments can be sent to the following:
