Forty-nine year old Brian Powers was arrested at the United Caring Shelter around 1:20 Monday afternoon. Police say he may also be connected with the stabbings of two other homeless men at Dress Plaza just last week.
The similarities between this morning's incident and the one at Dress Plaza earlier this month were apparently too striking for police to ignore. Both involve homeless men, all victims were slashed in the neck and nothing was stolen, with the suspect fleeing immediately after the attacks.
Today we spoke with one victim in the Dress Plaza incident who says today's arrest gives him peace but he'll never rest easy on the streets again.
Drake Bouchie is homeless. On a warm July night he and a friend found a place to sleep at Dress Plaza. He and his friend were attacked, their throats slashed. Police believe that incident is connected with the Monday morning stabbing of Robert Brown.
This surveillance video shows a white male who police believe is 49 year old Brian Powers, also homeless. So investigators had to dig for answers.
Tracy Gorman is the President of the Evansville Rescue Mission, where Bouchie now stays. He says when cases like this arise, he and other shelters like his work closely with police.
The tactic worked only hours after Powers' picture circulated. Should Powers prove to be the man who stabbed Bouchie, the young man says the experience changed his life.
He may have peace, but he'll live with a constant reminder of the dangers of living on the street.
Evansville police have just charged Powers with attempted murder in connection with Monday morning's incident, but not yet for the incident at Dress Plaza. That case is still under investigation.
