Many have called it an eyesore for years. As a result, the
Owensboro City Commission has decided to get rid of Gabe's Tower.
The City has
had the 13-story, round building in its signs for more than three years since
it closed six years ago. Leaders have fined the building's owner several times
for code violations, while waiting for the owner to begin work to restore the
building. But Mayor Ron Payne says that worked never happened, and the end is
near for the once thriving building.
"It reminds me of the old Executive Inn. It had reached the point that nobody was going to acquire it; nobody was going to do anything with it. It was just going to set there and become more and more of an eyesore. This piece of property here is quite similar to that. It's time to take it down and move on," he said.
Payne says the City will offer to reach some sort of agreement with the owner for the City to take ownership. If that doesn't happen, the Mayor says the city will take the owner to court.
