EVANSVILLE - Jobs, economic growth and the nation's aging infrastructure: the 8th district congressional race came to Evansville Tuesday.

Congressman Larry Buschon, who is facing a challenge by democrat Dave Crooks, was in town joined by high ranking republican congressman Bill Shuster

Both congressmen agree projects like I69 will have a major impact on the 8th district's economy.

But congressman Bill Shuster of Pennsylvania tells the nation's infrastructure is in disarray and the trickle down could be felt here if things aren't done to correct the problem soon.

"I69 is a very important project to the Evansville area and to the 8th congressional district. The economic development opportunities are almost endless," congressman Buschon said at a news conference Tuesday at the Evansville Regional Airport.

Evansville mayor Lloyd Winnecke joined the two congressman for Tuesday's event. He added, "If you look at how many communities grow and prosper, business and industries migrate to interstate highways."

According to the mayor, that long-term impact means the potential for great opportunity.

"We think we have a great chance, over the next 10, 15, 20 years to create a technology corridor and, it may not be the Silicon Valley, but, certainly, it has the potential for tremendous job growth."

But when it comes to other areas of the nation's infrastructure, Pennsylvania congressmen Bill Shuster, the favorite to be next in line as chairman of the House Transportation Committee, says the news isn't as good.

"Our country is not investing enough in its transportation system, its infrastructure." Shuster added, "The lock and dam system along the Ohio, the Mississippi back in to Pennsylvania, we're not investing enough and we've got, literally, locks and damns that are crumbling in this country and, if you can't ship up and down the river, you've got to put it on rails and trucks and it becomes more expensive."

INDOT expects to have I-69 completed to Crane, Indiana by the end of the year.

To bad the politics has to always cloud over the birds eye view. The Tri state is an "location with the location" to advantage technology in the future. When some of the weather clears enough to see that the thought of an blended infrastructure could maybe be really introduced with new thinking. The field of vision in regards to that will be almost unlimited onto the horizon forward . One very important feature regarding that is again being overlooked with the construction of I-69. I suppose whomever listens and studies the overall concept and supports the thing predictably wins every election for the next 20 years hands down...even nationally...locally the terrain and available construction workforce and engineering expertise provides examples of just how we could accomplish this. Something so advanced most of our time would be spent in training other areas in the applications to propel the whole country back into a job creation mode. The future is in the concept if anybody is interested, basic science easy applications. What remains of our surface coal mine industry would morph right into this as easy as giving them an blueprint and a contract They could complete the first phase with ease and probably under budget. The concept can even utilize rail options into the blend(huge there). Been thinking about this and its timing,(I guess that's still allowed isn't it?) I see something with large numbers in commerce and good jobs. Introduction of ideas around election time seem to always pose an issue with ethical acceptability in introduction timing, and that's to bad. There are some places in the country that even have more needs for the concept model. And yes we are spending billions there already while really not having the provisions to blend infrastructure needs as they evolve into the future and with an eye on the environment too. In other words no scientific fix, just a temporary patch so to speak. Evansville is the very reason I even studied the solution in the first place after all its my home,my people are supposed to thrive here. We have some rather large issues to face moving into the new century. Why not use one to fix some others? I would enjoy seeing a global focus on us,right here right now. For once lead instead of follow, actually become the teacher and then build into to the future.
