The theft of a campaign sign in Posey County is getting personal. The Posey County Sheriff's Office is investigating the theft of a campaign sign for John Sherretz, a democratic candidate for county commission. Deputies believe his opponent's wife may be behind the crime.

This weekend a Poseyville homeowner saw a woman load his yard sign supporting Sherretz into her car. Home surveillance video, a license plate and vehicle description led to Delene Schmitz as a suspect in the case. She is the wife of republican candidate, Carl Schmitz.

Sherretz says 75 to 100 of his campaign signs went missing this election season. The investigation involving Mrs. Schmitz is regarding a single campaign sign. At this time, there is no evidence linking her to any of the other missing signs.

Sherretz says he was shocked to hear his opponent's wife may have stolen one of his signs, but adds he has no hard feelings against Carl Schmitz or his wife. "If it was the other way around, I know how he and she must be feeling, and I extend my sympathy to them in that particular thing. Just can't hardly imagine that happening," says Sherretz.

At this time, no arrests have been made and no charges have been filed. Carl Schmitz initially agreed to talk with Eyewitness News about the allegations. He canceled the interview after he says the prosecutor's office told him not to talk to media.
