It's a debate that's sparking a debate of it's own.  One day after U.S. Senate candidate, Richard Mourdock makes controversial comments about abortion and rape, he comes forward with an explanation.

Richard Mourdock says he spoke from his heart, and his faith.  Joe Donnelly says the comment was hurtful and insulting to women and rape survivors.

"I just, I struggled with it for myself a long time and I came to realize life is a gift from God and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape that is something God intended to happen," Richard Mourdock said.

Some people say the comment was disturbing, but Republican candidate for U.S. Senate, Richard Mourdock says his comments were misunderstood.

"I had people calling me after the debate, 'Great job, you explained it perfectly.' I had other people calling and saying, 'What,'" Mourdock said.

Some say these few seconds might have made the difference in who will be the next U.S. Senator from Indiana.  But Mourdock says he thinks he will win the race.

"I made a comment that I made quite honestly from the deepest roots and the greatest base of my faith, which is to say that I believe life is precious, I believe that to the marrow of my bones," Mourdock said.

Mourdock says he took a stand to support life, and believes the one exception he sees for abortion is when the doctor realizes a woman's life is in danger.

Democrat U.S. Senate candidate, Joe Donnelly also held a news conference Wednesday saying Mourdock's comment was hurtful to women.

"Let me say I am pro life, but this controversy is not about pro-life, it is about Mr. Mourdock's words and his continuation of extreme positions. His words were extreme, but maybe as important, hurtful to survivors of sexual abuse," Joe Donnelly said.

Mourdock says he is moving on from this, and is confident Hoosier voters are going to be moving on and supporting him in big numbers.
