SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (AP) -- Police in suburban Detroit say a man who opened fire in a police station was killed in a shootout with officers.

Southfield police Lt. Nick Loussia says one officer was injured. He's in stable condition with a single gunshot wound. He's a 25-year department veteran.

Loussia says a 64-year-old Southfield man entered police headquarters Sunday afternoon, pointed a handgun at an officer behind protective glass and pulled the trigger.

The gun didn't fire, and the officer ordered him to drop the gun. Loussia says the gunman refused.

Loussia says other officers then ordered the suspect to drop the gun, and he pointed it at them. The lieutenant says the officers exchanged shots with the man, hitting him several times.

Police haven't released the names of the suspect or officer.
