Over the Veterans Day weekend, Mesker Park Zoo opened its doors to all Veterans and their families, free of charge.

Veterans from around the Tri-State made their way through Mesker's signature exhibits like Amazonia and the Botanical Garden.

Navy Veteran, Les Smith, spent the day at the zoo with his grandson.

"This day is pretty important to me, because i've got my grandson with me. First day going to the zoo, but as far as the day itself goes its a day of remembrance of what we fought for and why we're here.. the freedom that we got that just passed, lots of people didn't realize but if it wasn't for veterans of today they would never have the chance to vote it would be a free democracy like it is today", Smith said.

Zoo officials estimate more than a dozen veterans made the trip to the zoo.
