Evansville Police arrested a man early Friday morning after they say he tried to steal an air conditioning unit from the roof of a church.

According to police documents, 41-year-old Kenneth Hurtz was attempting to steal the unit from McFarland Baptist Church on Lincoln Avenue.

Officers say when they arrived, Hurtz ran away, and after a brief foot chase, was taken into custody.

According to police, the air conditioning unit, had already been taken apart, and parts of it had been lowered to the ground.

Investigators say the church had recently been victim of a similar theft, and had just replaced the air conditioner.  Police are currently investigating whether Hurtz had any involvement in that, and other recent incidents.
