The hits too close to home for many parents in the Tri-State. The traumatic shooting weighed heavily on the minds of the parents picking up their children from Jefferson Elementary School in Henderson Friday afternoon.

"It's just really, really heartbreaking," said Linda Barnett, as she waited to pick up her grandchildren. She and many other parents say it was heartbreaking to watch Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut -- a safe haven where young people learn -- attacked by a gunman. Investigators say Adam Lanes, 20, shot and killed 26 people, including 20 children, before apparently taking his own life.

"The way their faces looked from what I seen and some of the mothers and fathers crying... It just makes you wonder what goes through a person's mind when they decide to go into a school and take a lot of innocent people's lives," said Barnett. "I hope to God I never have to experience it. My heart ... and prayer goes out to the ones with what they're going through today and for the rest of their lives."

The questions 'why' and 'how' weighed heavy on the hearts of parents waiting anxiously for their children -- knowing 20 parents in Connecticut left school without a child.

"This time of year, Christmas, I don't know -- I can't think of anything worse that could happen," says Kenny Johnson. "It's terrible, it's heartbreaking. I have a kindergartner I just don't know why someone would do that."

The shooting rocked Tri-State parents' emotions and stirred their insides, but heavy hearts were soothed as parents held their child a little tighter -- thankful for today, unsure of what tomorrow will bring.
