Both sides of the gun control debate are making their opinions known on the NRA's proposal to put armed officers in every school.

Firearm rights attorney Brent Weil called the idea a "common sense proposal".  He says that having armed guards, or even teachers with firearms training, would give schools a better way of protecting themselves.

"They may not be effective in every situation, but isn't it better to give the teacher a chance to protect themselves, than to leave them defenseless," he says.

But not everyone agrees.  Gary May of Veterans for Peace says more people with guns doesn't always lead to fewer shootings.  He also says other things should be looked at to prevent future incidents, including how our culture glorifies violence.

"Violence in our whole culture, by looking at what happens, is a preferred method for ending disagreements, which is why we're a war-enamored country," he says.

Meanwhile, Evansville Police Chief Billy Bolin thinks there should be armed officers in schools.
