Evansville Police are patroling malls and parking lots, watching for any shoplifting or people looking to shoplift. Officer Brad Evrard says food, clothes, and small electronic items are some of the items shoplifters will try to take. He says a person's behavior is one way they can spot a would-be thief.
"A lot of times, you see someone walking in, they may act nervous. they may be looking around a lot, maybe walking slower than usual, looking for cameras," he says.
The patrols act as a deterrent similar to a speed trap. It makes people think twice about stealing.
"When you're driving down the road, you see the patrol car, you take notice to it. You may slow down," Evrard says. "Same thing with shoplifting. They see an officer out, they'll think twice about stealing."
Police also say if you see a shoplifter, you can either get a hold of the nearest store employee, or call 911.
