FBI: Purdue Reports 2nd Most Campus Hate Crimes

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) -- The FBI says Purdue University has the second-most reports of hate crimes among the country's colleges.

The Journal & Courier reports (http://on.jconline.com/UVP9D1 ) that the seven alleged hate crimes reported on the West Lafayette campus in 2011 was the highest number among Indiana colleges.

The FBI report says five of the Purdue incidents reflected racial bias and two were related to religion. The offenses involved assault, intimidation and vandalized property.

One hundred hate crimes were reported in Indiana last year, including 13 on college campuses.

Besides Purdue, hate crimes were reported at Indiana State, Indiana University-Southeast and Indiana University-Purdue University-Indianapolis.

IU-Bloomington was one of around 500 campuses reporting zero hate crimes to the FBI. But IU's annual security report logs three hate crimes in 2011.
