The Christmas shopping season's a big deal for major retailers, but it's also important for locally owned stores.

Several stores on West Franklin Street in Evansville saw their fair share of shoppers buying presents before they closed for the holidays.  Some preferred family-owned stores because of their customer service.

"They immediately began to help me when I walked into the door," says Ann Almquist of Evansville.  "I didn't have to look for somebody to help me."

Shawn Eickhoff of Paul's Menswear says they had a good holiday season, with sales picking up the past two months.  It's a trend she's noticed at other nearby shops.

"One of the other retailers I've talked to say it's been a fantastic year for them," she says.

But Christmas Eve can be hit or miss for other stores.  Tom Antes of Thomas's Shoes says it can vary from year to year.

"I've had Christmas Eves where you hardly can't throw them out the door and I've had Christmas Eves where it's been a little slow," he says.
