Things That Go Boom in the Night

Did you hear it?  Did you feel it?  Many Tri-Staters were jolted out of bed late Monday night.....by something.  But as of mid-morning on Tuesday, that something remains a mystery.

Just before midnight, Evansville Central Dispatch began receiving 911 calls from people who say they heard what sounded like a loud explosion.  Some say their homes even shook. However, officers investigating along the northeast part of the city say they found nothing out of the ordinary.

Similar reports were made to Eyewitness News, not just from Evansville, but Newburgh, Chandler and Boonville.  However, Warrick County Sheriff, Brett Kruse says, dispatchers there received no calls about the sound.

Our Facebook page has been lit up for most of Tuesday, with folks speculating on just what might have caused the mysterious bang.  Ideas range from a sonic boom caused by a military jet, to an earthquake, underground mining work, and yes, even little green men.

Vectren officials say the boom did not come from a blown transformer.  Evansville Regional Airport officials say they had no reports of military aircraft in the area at the time.  The only earthquake near the Tri-State was a 2.6 tremor in Tennessee on Monday, but the time doesn't match.  Of course, this area is home to numerous underground mines, and Eyewitness News is attempting to contact some of them to see if they can shed any light on the situation.

We will have the very latest on this midnight mystery later today on Eyewitness News.  In the meantime, If you heard or felt the boom, head to our Facebok page and join the conversation.
