The Vanderburgh Humane Society tells us that pit bulls are surging in popularity, and the trend is creating a problem. The majority of all dogs brought in are either pit bulls or pit bull mixes. To curb the problem, the Humane Society creates the Pit Stop Rrogram four years ago in an effort to reduce numbers of pit bulls coming into shelters. The society will spay or neuter any pit bull in Vanderburgh County for free.

"We do that," said Kendall Paul of VHS, "because we want to reduce the overall numbers of these dogs in our community, but we also want to make sure that the ones that are in our community are neutered so that does create a safer dog. We want to make sure those animals are fixed which is going to reduce aggression."

Pa
ul says 99 percent of fatal attacks come from male dogs who not neutered.

This sounds like a great plan but is the first time I have heard of it. I wonder how many pit bull owners take advantage of this. I think it should be more widely and routinely publicized
