Obama/Biden Introduce $500 Million Plan to Curb Gun Violence

By: Michael C. Fehn
Updated: January 16, 2013
President Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have just wrapped up a news conference, in which they set in motion, a plan to reduce gun violence in the U.S.

The plan includes nearly two dozen specific executive actions. Many of which are a direct response to last month's deadly shootings in Connecticut.

During the news conference, President Obama outlined three of the major objectives in the $500 million plan.
  • Require a universal background check for anyone wanting to purchase a gun
  • Congress should restore a ban on military style assault weapons and limit magazine clips to 10 rounds of ammunition.
  • Congress needs to help rather than hinder law enforcement to crack down on gun violence; and put more police back on the streets.
Obama is also directing the Centers for Disease Control to research gun violence and is seeking rules to ensure that law enforcement conducts background checks before returning seized firearms.  He says he also intends to nominate Todd Jones as director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.  Jones is currently the agency's acting director.
