Law To End Electoral College

By: Web Producer
Updated: April 8, 2008
Governor Signs Law To End Electoral College (Springfield) -- Illinois is now set to elect the next president by popular vote, just as soon as other states can agree. Governor Rod Blagojevich has signed a law that would end the electoral college, and choose a candidate based on the total number of votes. Advocates have been pushing for an end to the electoral college for years. Their cries got louder after the presidential election in 2000 and the troubles in Florida. Illinois is the third state to sign-up for the popular vote, but the plan wont become official until a majority of electoral college states sign on. Critics argue a popular vote system could disenfranchise some smaller communities and some smaller states. They also say it could lead to many recalls or other lawsuits.
