Fatality rates in United States mines hit an all-time low last year. The Mining Safety and Health Administration says 36 miners died in 2012, 19 in coal mines and 17 in metal and non-metal operations. Kentucky reported five mining deaths last year. This is the second-lowest amount of mining fatalities ever, with 2009 being the safest year with 35 deaths.
