IL Lawmakers Considering Teen Tanning Ban

Illinois lawmakers are pressing to make it illegal for teens to lay in a tanning bed.

A new proposal would ban anyone under 18 from using tanning beds, even if a parent signs a waiver saying it's okay.

Critics say the government should not be deciding what people can and cannot do.  Some tanning salons are also worried about how the ban would impact business.

If a parent signs a waiver that should be all that is needed. My son goes to a tanning salon to clear up severe acne at a fraction of the cost of what a dermatologist would charge for the use of the same equipment. He also has a healthy Vitamin D level thanks to the UV exposure and about 85% of the US population has a low Vitamin D level thanks to the message to avoid any and all UV exposure. That is more dangerous than the minimal risk of skin cancer. Tanning salons take great measures to ensure clients don't burn, THAT is really when there is an increased risk of skin cancer. Skin Type 1 (the fairest skin type) are turned away from salons because the risk of burn is too great and it isn't in the best interest of the client. If the law does not allow teens to use salons, they will seek out other methods, like home units, that are not regulated and therefore are more dangerous. While the proposed law may sound like it is a good idea to protect kids, in reality it could have the opposite result.
