IN Abortion Bill Passes in Senate

By: Michael C. Fehn
Updated: February 28, 2013
A bill in Indiana, requiring women to undergo an ultrasound before receiving abortion drugs, has cleared a legislative hurdle.

The bill has passed in the Senate, mostly along party lines, but Evansville G.O.P. Senator Vaneta Becker disagreed with the measure.

It would require clinics prescribing abortion drugs to perform ultrasounds beforehand.  Republican leaders say the bill is targeted at patient safety, but Senator Becker voted no.

"When you do this, you're not doing anything that will improve the health and safety of low-income women in the state of Indiana. All you' re doing is forcing them to go other ways, to get this same particular drug", Becker said.
