The Evansville Purple Aces accumulated more NCAA College Division Championship trophies than any other school and set attendance records that stood for nearly half a century. They were coached by Hall of Fame inductee Arad McCuthchan and produced scores of All- America players while taking on- and usually defeating- the major basketball powers. The Aces were inextricably bound through the years to the city and when tragedy took the team on Dec. 13, 1977 the loss was felt throughout the tri-state area. The remarkable comeback by the Aces to make the NCAA Tournament field just four seasons later is one of the sport's most remarkable accomplishments. Trophies And Tears is the first look behind the headlines at a unique college basketball team that gave the city a long sought identity. Together they shared Trophies and Tears.
