March Madness is Close but Some Say Post-Game Court Surging is Too Dangerous

We're creeping into March Madness, and we're already seeing some big upsets. Number one Indiana lost to Minnesota Tuesday and number three Duke fell to Virginia last night. A common sight after these wins are fans rushing the floor, but some coaches and staff say this puts their team in danger. Coach Mike Kryzewski made comments not about the outcome but about the post-game storm surge onto the floor. Coach K said Thursday quote, "When we've lost in the last 20 years, everybody rushes the court. Whatever you're doing, you need to get the team off first. Celebrate, have fun, obviously you won. That's cool, but just get our team off the court and our coaching staff before students come on." Lance Wilkerson with University of Evansville agrees with Coach K saying, "Absolutely I think it's very dangerous for the losing team, there's no question because they just lost, before they know it you see that video where they swarm, you have just seconds to get out of there." He says a better rule is needed but without robbing the fans of their joy. "I do think there needs to be a policy, no question, I think there has to be some kind of compromise because you can understand the fun of it, I think a compromise...to let the players actually go to the fans." "99 percent of the time it's safe and it's been fun but you always have to be aware of that one percent." Wilkerson tells us there is no court surging policy in place at U.E when they play at the Ford Center due to the school's smaller size,  but admits a universal NCAA rule would take care of both fan and player safety, because the college hoops madness is just beginning and Wilkerson says we're in the midst of storm season...court storming season that is. Coach K goes on to say security measures are essential to also rule out hostility which could lead to player or student suspensions and violence
