ELIZABETHTOWN, Ky. (AP) -- Kentucky State Police say six people were killed and two injured when the SUV in which they were riding burst into flames after being rear-ended by a tractor-trailer. The crash was swiftly followed by another in the opposite direction, injuring three.

The initial crash at 11:13 a.m. EST Saturday occurred on northbound Interstate 65 south of Elizabethtown. Master Trooper Norman Chaffins says that minutes later, a four-vehicle crash at the same location but on the southbound side of the highway injured three people, one critically.

The two crashes shut down the busy stretch of central Kentucky highway in both directions for about five hours.

Chaffins says despite snow flurries, weather was not a factor in either crash.

He said one eyewitness to the first crash told police two people emerged from the fiery SUV and one appeared to be on fire.
