UPDATE: Neighbors are crediting quick responses by firefighters and other residents in keeping a morning apartment fire from getting worse.

Two people were hurt this morning after an apartment was destroyed and four others were damaged by a fire at Garvin Park Apartments.  But neighbors say it could have been worse.  Sean Teer helped wake up some of his neighbors after the fire started.  He says if firefighters didn't arrive as soon as they did, the whole complex could've burned down.

"We could've lost the entire apartment building very easily," he says.  "Both sectors could've went down."

Neighbors are also crediting Evansville firefighters for their quick response.

"They were here so quick, as soon as they got the 911 call, they were here, and they did a real great job getting here on time and putting it out," says Megan Jones.

Officials say the cause appears to be electrical.  They add oxygen tanks inside the apartment helped fuel the fire.

ORIGINAL: Firefighters were called to the Garvin Park Apartments in Evansville shortly after 5 a.m. after receiving multiple calls about a possible fire in one of the apartment units. Once on scene firefighters battled heavy smoke and fire in one of the units. Two occupants of that apartment were taken to Deaconess Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Red Cross assisted with 2 families that have been displaced by the blaze.
Officials believe the cause to be electrical, and that oxygen tanks help to fuel the fire.
