Long-Awaited Day Comes For The Darmstadt Woman Needing A Kidney Transplant

A Darmstadt woman, and perhaps the entire community of Darmstadt has been waiting for this day for a long time. "We did just get news that everything went well, and she's out of surgery, and the donor is doing fine too." Lisa Keck underwent a successful kidney transplant this morning at the IU Medical Center in Bloomington. We first brought you the story of Lisa and Kerry Keck last summer as the husband and the wife were both awaiting kidney transplants.
Today it was Lisa who received the first surgery from a donor who wishes to remain anonymous. A married couple needing the same transplant is extremely rare, and it's caught the attention of many including the Keck's neighbors, and members of the couple's church who worked numerous fund raisers, and offered countless support during the battle. Friends and family of Lisa Keck say it's been a long day waiting to hear results of her kidney transplant , now relief is seen on the faces of her friends. "It makes you appreciate your health that you do have." Dottie and Jim Kahre are members at Trinity Lutheran Church in Darmstadt where Lisa and Kerry attend. Just as the Keck's vowed to support one another through their rare situation, so has their church. "Very much so a family environment. We need to help them. Everybody in the church has really chipped in and helped," says the Kahre's. Several fundraisers and events have been held to help Lisa and Kerry, and the Kahre's say the outcome has been overwhelming. "It was just amazing the support that we got from not only our church, but from the community." An anonymous kidney donor, and tons of community support, Dottie says her friend is finding it hard to accept so much. "Well, Lisa, she just kept saying there is somebody out there who needs help more than I do. It was very hard for her to accept the out flowing of money and help, but she was a gracious receiver with it," says Kahre. Today is a triumph, but friends and family know the Keck's battle is only half over. "It's getting to the point where he's going to have to go in like Lisa has been doing. He's just kind of behind her."
As lisa recovers and her husband begins this same battle, friends say this couple will continue to have the support of many. "I think she would want to thank everybody for all the progress, all the support, and i'm sure she still needs a lot of prayers."
This is only the first step in this couple's long journey and the Trinity Lutheran Church in Darmstadt says they are accepting any donations.
