Lincoln City Post Office honors 16th President’s Indiana boyhood home May 11
LINCOLN CITY, IN-- The Lincoln City Post Office will offer a special pictorial postmark honoring the 200th anniversary of President Abraham Lincoln’s birth. The special postmark will be available for 30 days, beginning Sunday, May 11, to coincide with Indiana’s bicentennial kickoff celebration at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial.
The Lincoln City Post Office is located in the Visitor Center at the Memorial and will be open Sunday, May 11, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. CT. There will be a booth set up outside in the courtyard for the special postmark.
“The Postal Service offers pictorial postmark cancellations to commemorate local events celebrated in communities throughout the nation,” said Lincoln City Postmaster Kay Graves. “People attending the Mother’s Day event at the Lincoln Boyhood National Memorial may obtain the cancellation in person.”
The Postal Service will have a variety of stamps, envelopes and postal merchandise on sale for postmarking.
“The postmark highlights the 14 years the 16th President lived in Spencer County, Indiana,” said Kay Bertl, co-chairman of the Spencer County Lincoln Bicentennial Committee. “He came to Indiana at age seven and moved to Illinois at age 21.”
The grave of his mother, Nancy Hanks Lincoln, is located in the park.
For those who cannot attend the event, but wish to obtain the cancellation, they may the pictorial cancellation by mail. Requests must be postmarked no later than June 10. Additionally, customers should allow at least a 2-inch by 4-inch space in the stamp area for the picture postmark; and have postage applied to cards or letters before bringing to the event or mailing them to the Post Office;
