Indiana Summary --- Eli Lilly Reports Sales Increases In First Quarter (Indianapolis) -- Indianapolis-based drug maker Eli Lilly and Company is reporting a 14-percent sales increase for the first quarter of 2008. The company says net income of over one-billion-dollars translates into 97-cents a share. The success has Lilly revising its year-long earnings outlook upward from prior advisories. Sales of the antidepressant Cymbalta rose 37-percent compared to the same time last year. "The Wall Street Journal" reports part of the gains were due to an accounting tax gain. The results have not been enough to impress investors, with shares of Lilly down by more than four-percent in Monday morning trading on the New York Stock Exchange. --- Deadly Shooting Outside Family Video Store (Indianapolis) -- There was a deadly shooting last night at the Family Video store at 30th and Georgetown in Indianapolis. Police Sergeant Paul Thompson says that two men struggled over a gun. One pulled the gun on another during a would-be robbery in an SUV. Thompson says the suspect was dead at scene. Police have not released the names of the victim or the suspect. 1/81/8 Note nature of story 3/83/8 --- Trial Underway In 2007 Burning Death (Indianapolis) -- Testimony is underway in the trial of an Indianapolis man accused of killing his girlfriend by setting her on fire. Michael Wilson is charged with murder in the death of Nupur Srivastava a year ago. Marion County deputy prosecutor Brad Banks told the jury during opening statements that Wilson changed his story three times in an attempt to cover up his actions. Wilson allegedly poured gasoline on Srivastavas lap and then set the fire with a lighter. Defense attorney Marvin Coffey said that the gas spilled when Srivastava reached for the container during an argument. Wilson is expected to testify in his own defense. --- Feds Offer Ten-Thousand-Dollars In Search For Unknown Robbers (Indianapolis) -- The FBI is seeking the publics help in capturing two men suspected of robbing a Gary bank nearly two weeks ago. The agency has posted a ten-thousand-dollar reward for information leading to the arrest of the individuals responsible for the theft. The incident happened around 11:15 a.m. on Thursday April 10th at the Harris Bank, located at 2746 West 5th Avenue. Authorities say the robbers got away with an undisclosed amount of cash. They were wearing what seemed to be hospital or Hazmat type, light-blue, one-piece coveralls, grayish-brown hoods and masks. The pair reportedly entered the bank with a black assault rifle. After shooting the guard, they took his weapon and started to take money from a number of teller drawers. They were last seen getting into a burgundy/silver 1988 two-door pickup truck. The vehicle, which was discovered to be stolen, was later found four blocks from the bank. Kentucky Summary (Louisville, KY) -- The Jefferson County Coroners office is trying to identify skeletal remains that were found on Sunday near the eight-thousand block of St. Andrews Church Road. Officials say the remains appear to be that of a middle-age white male, who was five-feet-six to five-feet-eight, with a 34-to-36-inch waist. A state anthropologist has determined that the man has been dead for at least four years. A circular key ring with eleven keys, two of which are for a Ford, were found near the body. A nylon, olive webbed strap with a tag saying "Dayton Electric Manufacturing" was found near the remains as well. If you have any information, youre asked to call the coroners office at 574-6262. (Louisville, KY) -- Metro Police are looking for a male suspect after a woman was stabbed yesterday morning. Officials say they are looking for Ricky OShea Workman, who is also wanted on an unrelated outstanding warrant. The woman was able to break free, but was taken to University Hospital, where her condition is unknown. Spokeswoman Alicia Smiley says the woman was leaving her home in the 21-hundred block of Bank Street to take her 15-year-old son to school when she was stabbed several times in the head. The 15-year-old escaped and was unharmed. Anyone with more information is asked to contact 574-LMPD. (Hardin County, KY) -- The principal of John Hardin High School was arrested Sunday night after police say they found him driving drunk along KY. 1600. Alvin Garrison spent Sunday night in the Hardin County Jail, but, was released Monday morning on an unsecured bond. The superintendent of Hardin County Schools, Nannette Johnston, says she isnt sure what disciplinary action will be taken. This is Garrisons second year as principal at John Hardin High School. A not guilty plea was entered on his behalf yesterday morning. (Louisville, KY) -- Jefferson Circuit Court Judge Kathleen Voor Montano died yesterday morning from pneumonia complications. She was married with four teenage children and had been a Jefferson Circuit Court judge since 2004. Montano had been sick all last week but had been in the hospital trying to get better. She graduated from U of L law school in 1987. She was 46-years-old. (Louisville, KY) -- The Salvation Army Donation Centers and Family Stores are helping to increase their efforts to keep unsellable items out of Louisville landfills. The group has announced as part of Earth Day that new initiatives have been put into place to help salvage 25-to-50-percent more of unsellable goods. Officials say all unsellable plastic products will be sorted and sold to local recycling companies. All unsellable electronics and paper products will also be sold to local recycling companies. Officials say each year more than two-million pounds of unsellable materials are processed through the Salvation Army. (Louisville, KY) -- A 17-story condo is being planned for Cherokee Triangle. A developer wants to build the "Willow Grande" at the corner of Willow and Baringer Avenues. The move would require the demolition of the Bordeaux Apartments. If approved, the condo would be the second-tallest building in the Highlands and would require a zoning change. The first public meeting on the proposed condo tower is expected to be held sometime in May. (Louisville, KY) -- A man who was found guilty of manslaughter will be sentenced tomorrow. Larry Watts will be sentenced after a jury found him guilty of the April 2007 shooting death of Clifton Jones. Police say Jones was shot to death in the 19-hundred block of Goldsmith Lane, in the Turtle Creek Apartment Complex. Sentencing will be held at 9:30 a.m. (Louisville, KY) -- An arena bond insurance offer is expected sometime this week. Goldman Sachs head Greg Carey says the total interest cost on 360-million-dollars in bonds would run in the low 600-million dollar range. The deal would agree to sell the projects debt in June, and the offer would be from bond insurer Assured Guaranty. Officials say the projected amount is less than Goldmans 573-million-dollars estimate when the company was hired in January of 2007. (Louisville, KY) -- Former Jefferson County Sheriff Allen Hamilton passed over the weekend after an illness. Hamilton also had served as the Jefferson County Fiscal Court clerk and was a University of Kentucky running back back in the early 50s. He was 83-years-old. (Upton, KY) -- Motorists in Upton may have to reroute their road trips this morning. Quarry Road will be closed at the CSX railroad crossing starting at 8 a.m. The road is scheduled to reopen at 4 p.m. on Wednesday. (Frankfort, KY) -- International Tooling Solutions is opening a new plant in Frankfort. The company is locating in a building in Industrial Park 1. The company says the plant will mean 70 new jobs. International Tooling is holding a technical job fair in its new facility next Monday and Tuesday. Illinois Summary --- Tanker Truck Causes Overpass Damage On Edens (Chicago) -- A tanker-trailer accident has caused serious damage to the Winnetka Road overpass on the Edens Expressway. State Police say the truck was headed north on I-94 shortly before midnight when it lost its tanker full of water. The tanker hit the Winnetka Road overpass, causing structural damage. The right lane of the outbound Edens remain blocked through the area, and Winnetka Road over the highway is closed so crews can survey the structural damage. --- Murder Suspect Pursued, AMBER Alert Issued For Three Children (Chicago) -- An AMBER Alert remains in effect for three Chicago children after their mother was found murdered Monday. Chicago Police say family members found 30-year-old Sophia Garcias body about noon at her home in the 17-hundred block of North Harding Avenue. Police believe she may have been killed Friday, and allege 32-year-old Benito Casanova in the attack. Six-year-old Oscar Casanova, seven-year-old Karla Casanova, and eleven-year-old Fernando Casanova were all taken Friday afternoon from a home in the 18-hundred block of North Richmond. Police believe the older Casanova is trying to flee to Mexico with the children. Hes driving a silver or gray Dodge Dakota, with license plate 8-6-1-9-6-H-B. Benito Casanova is described as a sixt-foot-one, 230-pound Hispanic man with brown hair and eyes. --- Suspects In Shooting Of Four Arrested (Chicago) -- Chicago police believe theyve captured the man who shot three-people, killing one, at a South Side McDonalds restaurant last night. A spokesperson says a 25-year-old man got in the victims van in the 76-hundred block of South Vincennes Avenue at about 7:30 p.m. There was an exchange of gunfire, and the suspect jumped out of the van and into a waiting SUV. Authorities say the SUV then drove off, but crashed just blocks away on 76th Street. Police say they arrested both the alleged shooter and the driver of that SUV. Meanwhile, the victims drove their van to a nearby hospital. A 28-year-old man shot in the chest was dead on arrival, a 23-year-old shot in the head is in critical condition, and a 25-year-old shot twice is in serious condition. The alleged shooter also is in critical condition with a gunshot wound to his leg. Police still dont have any word on a motive. --- Teacher Pension Schemes Detailed At Rezko Trial (Chicago) -- Indicted political fundraiser Tony Rezko is entering his fraud trial without a police escort this week, for the first time. Rezko was allowed out of jail on eight-and-a-half-million-dollars bond on Friday. Yesterday, he listened as the former attorney for Illinois Teachers Retirement System testified about a scheme to extort kickbacks from companies wanting to do business with the state. Steve Loren lost his composure at times on the stand as he detailed finders fees that were supposed to go to people who werent involved in any deals. Loren claims he and Stuart Levine agreed to require the payments, which would go to people designated by Rezko and another Blagojevich fundraiser, Chris Kelly. Loren and Levine have both pleaded guilty in the federal case. --- Man Stabs Teens Who Attacked Him (Chicago) -- One Chicago teenager is dead and another seriously injured after a 53-year-old man stabbed them early this morning. Chicago Police say the incident happened near the intersection of East 73rd Street and South Stony Island Avenue at about 12:40. Authorities say a 16-year-old and an 18-year-old were drinking on the street when the older man approached them. Police say the teens attacked the older man who tried to walk away but was pulled back. He then stabbed the teens. The 16-year-old was pronounced dead upon arrival at Stroger Hospital, while the 18-year-old is in serious condition. Police have the older man in custody and are continuing to investigate. --- Bellwood Closes Two Schools After Threat Found (Bellwood) -- Two schools in suburban Bellwood are closed today after a violent message was found yesterday. Bellwood Police say Marshall Elementary School officials discovered the message in a bathroom stall. It read, "Prepare to Die 4/22/08." Police recommended the school and Roosevelt Middle School be closed as a precaution. Authorities found nothing during a sweep of the building, and school officials hope to reopen on Wednesday. --- Mayor Criticizes Transit Leaders About Handling Of Stalled Subway Train (Chicago) -- The CTA wasted too much time before contacting emergency personnel in the wake of last weeks Blue Line breakdown. So says Mayor Daley, who is unhappy about the agencys communications failure. He says its unacceptable that riders waited an hour with very little information after a subway train broke down near the Clark and Lake station. Hundreds of frustrated passengers streamed from one of four trains stuck in the subway, forcing officials to shut off part of the Blue Lines power. Daley thanked riders who were affected by last Tuesdays transportation crisis and promised that things will change. --- Cook County Sheriff Takes Over Ford Heights Patrol (Ford Heights) -- The Village of Ford Heights no longer has a police department. Cook County Sheriffs deputies are taking over protection for the village, since its police officers simply stopped coming to work. Sheriff Tom Dart says his deputies already worked the overnight and morning shifts, but now theyll take over the day shift too. The Ford Heights department was down to just three police officers as of March, but then one of them was put on administrative leave. The others will be reassigned. Dart says the extra patrols will cost the county more than two-million-dollars a year. --- Mail Fraud Charges For Company That Overcharged IDOT (Chicago) -- Federal authorities claim an Elgin engineering firm overcharged the state Department of Transportation more than one-million-dollars over a nine-year period. Prosecutors charged KAM Engineering and its owner, Kamleshwar Gupta, with four-counts of mail fraud yesterday. Each carries a maximum of 20-years in prison and a 250-thousand-dollar fine. The suit also wants the bilked money to be repaid, but an IDOT spokesman tells the "Chicago Sun-Times" thats already happened. Prosecutors claim Gupta signed fake invoices and ordered a bookkeeper to alter timesheets. --- "Benny The Bull" Sued For High-Five Mishap (Chicago) -- Benny the Bull is in trouble again. Barry Anderson, who portrays the Chicago Bulls excitable mascot, is being sued for a February courtside incident. Dr. Don Kalant Sr., an oral surgeon, claims Benny the Bull tripped while giving him a high five. The "Chicago Tribune" reports the mascot grabbed Kalants arm to stop himself from falling, hyperextending the arm and rupturing the mans bicep. Kalant claims he could miss four-months of work. He says Anderson was negligent and is seeking unspecified damages. In 2006, Anderson was arrested for allegedly punching an off-duty Cook County Sheriffs deputy trying to stop him from riding a mini-motorcycle through Grant Park. The charges were dropped.
