Report: Possible Solution For Peanut Allergies
(Washington, DC) -- There may be a solution for people allergic to peanuts.
Dr. Wesley Burks, a food allergy expert at Duke University Medical Center, says theres a form of immunotherapy that may be available within the next five years.
In the "Lancet" medical journal, Burks writes there are "multiple types of studies that are ongoing now" to cure the condition, including the possibility of changing a persons immune response to peanuts.
Burks says possible approaches include using engineered peanut proteins as immunotherapy or using Chinese herbal medicine in animal research.
Symptoms of peanut allergy includes skin reactions such as hives and itching.
Other symptoms include diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting and shortness of breath.
