In the face of long possible delays from a taxpayer groups petition, the EVSC school board voted Monday night to let voters have the final say on the corporations $150 million strategic agenda.
The plan calls for construction of a new north side high school and middle school complex, and sweeping upgrades to several other facilities. The board voted in favor of the agenda at its 1029 hearing in April. Last week, members of the Vanderburgh County Taxpayers Association filed a petition and remonstrance, challenging the agenda. If that petition process was allowed to run its course, it could have delayed new construction by as much as 170 days before the outcome was decided in a signature drive. If the Taxpayers Association won the signature drive, that could have potentially shut down the start of construction for another year, and increased construction costs by an estimated 43.7 to $4.4 million.
In the face of those delays, the EVSC board voted to begin the process of putting the strategic agenda on the November ballot. If it is approved by Vanderburgh County voters, work could begin immediately.
