Trooper Injured during Altercation, Drunk Driver Arrested
Evansville – Early Sunday morning, June 1, at approximately 3:20 a.m., Trooper Mike Lehmkuhler stopped a white 1987 Chevrolet Monte Carlo on Illinois Street near 1st Avenue for a traffic violation. The driver identified himself as Alex Hagan, 23, of Henderson, KY. While talking to Hagan, Trooper Lehmkuhler detected a strong odor of an alcoholic beverage. Before a field sobriety test could be administered, Hagan fled from the car on foot. Trooper Lehmkuhler chased Hagan for approximately one block before catching him. Hagan continued to resist arrest and struck Trooper Lehmkuhler. Trooper Lehmkuhler used his chemical agent and sprayed Hagan’s eyes, but he still was able to run back to his car. Passengers that were still inside Hagan’s car attempted to take the keys out of the ignition to prevent him from driving off, but Hagan was able to start the car and flee the area. Hagan drove eastbound on Illinois Street and eventually eastbound on Franklin Street to Main Street where he was traveling in excess of 60 mph. After traveling on several different city streets, Hagan drove onto Veterans Memorial Parkway and traveled eastbound toward U.S. 41 in excess of 80 mph. Hagan crossed the U.S. 41 Bridge into Kentucky, stopped and ran toward the Ohio River. An Evansville Police K-9 quickly captured Hagan. He was taken to Deaconess Hospital where he was treated for dog bites. After being treated for his injuries, Hagan was taken to the Vanderburgh County Jail where he is currently being held without bond. Trooper Lehmkuhler was also taken to Deaconess Hospital where he was treated and released for minor injuries.
