Passengers Trapped For Several Hours On Diverted Plane
(Gary, IN) -- Dozens of United Airlines passengers are unhappy after being stuck on-board an airplane at the Gary-Chicago airport for six hours.
Their flight from Denver to Chicago was diverted to Gary late Sunday night because of bad weather.
But the only part of the airport open 24-hours is the refueling facility.
The terminal, tower, and bathroom facilities were all locked and off-limits.
Gary-Chicago Airport Director Chris Curry tells "ABC-7" 1/81/8WLS3/83/8 no one from United ever contacted the airport to tell them about the situation.
United blames a communications breakdown.
The airline says its offering travel and food vouchers to the affected passengers, and is apologizing for the mistakes.
In all, the passengers were on the airplane for about 12 hours, including flight time.
Gary is about 30 miles from Chicago.
