More Body Piercings, More Complications

More Body Piercings, More Complications More and more people are suffering from body piercings gone-wrong. The BBC reports scores of young women have a body piercing other than on their ears and many of them pierced themselves. Researchers in London surveyed over ten-thousand Britons aged 16 and up found they had suffered from complications in a body piercing. The symptoms include swelling, infection and bleeding. The figures show there has been a definite boom in body piercings over the years which Dr. Angie Bone finds surprising. She says the almost 50-percent of young women with a piercing could pose a problem for health organizations if future generations follow suit. She said, quote, "there is a message here for the health service that body piercing is really very common and, if it remains fashionable, in the near future one in two women will have a body piercing and there will be more complications." A botched body piercing can take up to ten months to heal. (Copyright 2008 by Newsroom Solutions) RNS-06-13-08 0221CDT
