A company in China is believed to be the source of wheat gluten blamed for the deaths of pets that consumed Menu Foods. An investigation by the FDA revealed "melamine" is thought to be the ingredient that has caused sickness and deaths in numerous pets, not rat poison.
Menu Foods says it discontinued using the Chinese company as a supplier of wheat gluten earlier in March.
The FDA is working to determine how the gluten found its way into pet food.
Menu Foods said it will take responsibility and provide compensation to pet owners who have been affected by the tainted food.
Another pet food company is recalling some of its product . Hill's Pet Food Company is voluntarily recalling its "Prescription Science Diet M/D" dry cat food because of melamine contamination.
