Tri-Staters to Aid in Breast Cancer Research

Have you ever said to a friend or family member who is facing breast cancer, “How can I help?” There are the usual ways you can help--- by providing support, lending a listening ear, helping with meals, transportation, etc. But. . . . . . .. WOULD YOU LIKE TO DO MORE? Here is a perfect opportunity for you to do just that. Most of you have participated in the Komen Evansville Race for the Cure®. Now you can “Take the Race One Step Further”. You can be a tissue donor -- you can make a difference! Seventy-two (72) motivated Tri-state area women will travel to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Tissue Bank at the IU Simon Cancer Center in Indianapolis to participate in a tissue collection day, at which time a small sample of breast tissue will be collected. You can be one of those women. Better yet, have a friend come with you to be a donor too! Two buses will be available to transport these women to and from Indianapolis on June 21, 2008 to be tissue donors. This tissue bank was created in response to a need by scientists carrying out breast cancer research. For questions or more information, contact the Tissue Bank Event Coordinator in Indianapolis, Casey Allen at 866-763-0047 or calallen@iupui.edu or check their website at www.komentissuebank.iu.edu. In order to participate, individuals must: - Be female 18 years or older - Have the ability to understand and the willingness to sign an informed consent. (No signs of dementia or any psychiatric conditions that would not allow the understanding or rendering of informed consent) - Be willing to complete a questionnaire and a breast biopsy - Not be allergic to local anesthetics (numbing medicine) - Not be receiving a therapeutic blood thinner (This does not include aspirin.) - Not have breast implants or have had a breast reduction In the Tri-state area, Komen volunteers are among the first to be notified about this opportunity. If you qualify and have an interest in being a donor, please contact us as soon as possible. After Friday, May 23 we will begin recruiting other groups in addition to the Komen volunteers. Once we receive your contact information, we will send you more details. Susan G. Komen for the Cure® 4424 Vogel Road, Suite 205 Evansville, IN 47715 Fax: 812-962-2204 Email: info@komenevansville.org
