Top Ten Films In Ten Movie Genres Its the godfather of gangster movies. The American Film Institute unveiled Francis Ford Coppolas 1972 classic "The Godfather" the number one movie in the gangster genre. It was just one of 100 films AFI unveiled Tuesday night in the three hour CBS special "AFIs 10 Top Ten." From animation to sports, the countdown included a look back at ten memorable films in ten classic genres with the help of film artists associated with each category. Among the other films at the top of the heap were: "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" in the animation category; "The Wizard of Oz" in Fantasy; "2001: A Space Odyssey" topped the Sci-Fi genre, and Martin Scorseses "Raging Bull" led the Sports field. The 1956 John Wayne film "The Searchers" topped the Western category, while the 1958 Alfred Hitchcock thriller "Vertigo" was named the number one Mystery. "City Lights," the 1934 silent film starring Charlie Chaplin, led the top ten list of Romantic Comedies; the 1962 courtoom classic "To Kill A Mockingbird" was number one among the Courtroom Dramas, and 1962s "Lawrence Of Arabia" topped the list of Epic movies.
