Conservation officers arrest two men for illegally catching paddlefish for caviar. Fishing in closed waters is what put 27-year old Randall Voorhees and 22-year old Remington Voorhees behind bars. The men are accused of catching paddlefish from areas on the Ohio river and Hovey lake. The draw to these fish?, theyre eggs. Acquiring eggs from theses waters is big business. Paddlefish eggs are important to the commercial caviar business. Much of the caviar that is sold as sturgeon roe is actually paddlefish roe. The top reasons for the decrease in paddlefish is over-harvesting, construction of dams and rivers, and pollution. Its something that not only has biologists concerned, but now law enforcement agencies. While commercial fishing of paddlefish is legal, there are restrictions on when and where you can fish, and requires a commercial permit. More charges are expected in the case.
