Officials Announce Biofuels Partnership

Updated: December 2, 2008
Officials announce biofuels partnership (Frankfort) A Kentucky university and an energy-technology developer have formed a partnership they hope will boost advances in sustainable biofuel. Officials said today that Eastern Kentucky University and General Atomics will team to lay the foundation for what could be a new renewable-fuel industry in Kentucky and beyond. With the establishment of the Eastern Kentucky University Center for Renewable and Alternative Fuel Technologies, researchers will examine the potential for a cellulose-derived biodiesel industry in Kentucky. The effort involves developing ways to process fuel produced from wood, grasses and other vegetation grown locally. Officials say the project offers both a technological underpinning for sustainable fuel production and a technology that could benefit agriculture in Kentucky and other places. General Atomics - based in San Diego - specializes in diversified research, development and manufacturing in defense, energy and other advanced technologies. The project is being funded in part by four million dollars in federal money. (Copyright 2007 Newsroom Solutions, LLC) Delivered by Newsroom Solutions RNS-12-01-08 1731CST
