Aces targeting three coaches for men`s basketball vacancy

FOX 7 has learned that the University of Evansville has narrowed its search for a new men`s basketball coach down to three main candidates. Our sources tell us Belmont head coach Rick Byrd is one of the three coaches being targeted by the Aces. But, our contacts in Nashville called Byrd tonight. The long-time Bruins` coach said he has yet to be contacted by UE. Byrd says the front-runner, in his opinion, is first-year Wright State head coach Brad Brownell. The Harrison High School grad led the Raiders to the Horizon League Tournament championship on Tuesday night. Many people think this eliminates Brownell from UE`s wish list, but our sources are confirming that he is one of the top three guys. Those same sources say Brownell was unhappy at Wright State in the middle of the season. The final main candidate could actually be the one most likely to get the job - former Aces` player and assistant coach - Marty Simmons. Simmons is currently the head coach at SIU-Edwardsville. Stay tuned to FOX 7 as we continue to follow the search for Steve Merfeld`s successor.
