At the Vanderburgh Humane Society, accepting surrendered cats is nothing out of the ordinary. But it's the number of surrendered cats this month that has humane society officials worried.
The VHS has accepted nearly 300 cats since May 1st and now they're worried about space and supplies. While the spring and summer months are usually the peak time of year for animal surrenders, officials say this month is just bizarre.
"We haven't seen this many cats in a single month in the last five years," said Sydney Long. "That's a lot of mouths to feed."
Long says the early start to Spring could have played a factor in this feline influx. Many of the cats are available for adoption.
The VHS has sought help from other shelters in the area but they need your help as well.
