Indianapolis Fire Lt. Larry Tracy told WISH-TV that several firefighters were overcome by heat and needed medical attention.
The three-alarm blaze broke out shortly before 9 p.m. Friday and quickly spread to nearby utility poles. The danger posed by the power lines and the heat from the blaze forced firefighters to retreat and focus on preventing the fire's spread.
Firefighters brought it under control within an hour. Tracy, the department spokesman, said the building was a total loss but a church about 100 feet away was spared.
Fire investigators were expected to be on the scene Friday night and in the coming days to find the cause.
