Indiana Releases ISTEP Results

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) -- Indiana students made modest gains on the state's ISTEP tests last school year and one South Bend school might have averted a state takeover.

Scores released Tuesday by the state Education Department show that of the 500,000 students taking the standardized tests, 71 percent passed both the language arts and math sections. That's up one percentage point from last year.

Dickinson Fine Arts Academy in South Bend showed the most improvement of any middle school in the state. The school has been given a performance grade of "F" for four years and faced possible state takeover if it remained at that level for six consecutive years.

The state took control of four Indianapolis schools and one Gary school after last year's test results were released.
