In recognition of
Prostate Awareness Month, the American Urological Association (AUA) Foundation
and the National Football League (NFL) have teamed up to
launch the "Know Your Stats" campaign to drive awareness of
prostate cancer nationwide.
Now in its 4th year,
the campaign aims to promote prostate health and tackle the lack of awareness by
encouraging men 40+ to talk with their doctors about prostate cancer and get
regular physical examinations.
Prostate cancer, which
is the second leading cause of cancer, claims over 33,000 lives each year. One
in six men will receive the diagnosis at some point in their lives. Luckily,
with early detection, people with prostate cancer have a high survival rate. In
fact, if detected early, the 5-year survival rate is almost
100%.
Former NFL players and
Hall of Famers Harry Carson and Mike Haynes have joined the effort to reach men
about this critical health issue.
About
Mike Haynes:
Widely
recognized as one of the NFL's greatest defensive backs,
Hall of Fame inductee Mike Haynes began his career with the New England Patriots
in 1976. After seven years, he moved on to the Los Angeles Raiders. Since his
retirement from football in 1989, Mike has made a career of giving back to his
community. As a spokesman for "Know Your Stats," and as a prostate cancer
survivor himself, Mike is committed to helping men take control of their
health.
About
Harry Carson:
A
linebacker for the New York Giants from 1976 to 1988, Harry Carson has one of
the longest careers in NFL history, culminating with his induction into the Hall
of Fame in 2006. Harry has launched a successful career in sports broadcasting
since his retirement from the Giants, and considers his partnership with "Know
Your Stats" an opportunity to help fellow players, along with fans, make
positive choices about their health.
