breaking news
Saturday morning 8-noon, September 22, Historic Newburgh will once again host
the weekly Farmers Market and their annual English Boot Sale (yard sale out of
the back of your trunk). An added twist to the Farmers Market is that Sandy
Morris Andrews will have a book signing. She has written two historical fiction
books about the Underground Railroad. Both books are on sale in our HNI Gift
Shop.
In the author's first book, Best Friends: Southern IN
1860 is about best friends who helped free slaves in the Underground
Railroad. Written for teens but enjoyed by all ages, the first book, chronicles
the friendship of kids growing up near Poseyville in Southwestern, IN with two
freed African American teenagers.
The second book, Best Friends: Beth Keeps Her Promise
1861-1865, follows the friends as they secretly help slaves escape to
freedom.
The Underground Railroad, a vast network of people
helped fugitive slaves escape to the North and to Canada. The escape north was
not easy. The first step was to escape from the slaveholder. Sometimes it was
on his or her own. Other times a "conductor" would enter a plantation and then
guide the runaways north from station to station.
Enjoy the Farmers Market, browse the Boot Sale for some
bargains and learn about and purchase these two great books about the
Underground Railroad. All this and the sounds of the Little Old Dam Band will
make this Saturday, down by the river, special.
